Beati Omnes (Psalmus 4)

An excerpt from a 17th century Spanish psalm-setting, alternating between choir and the chromatic Spanish arpa de dos ordenes. Performed in the Collegiate Church of San Pedro in Lerma, Spain, as part of a reconstruction of the First Vespers and Salve Service as it was performed in the presence of King Philip III and the Duke of Lerma.

The Irish harper Ruaidhrí Dall Ó Catháin (c.1570 – 1650) spent much of his life in the Scottish Highlands. This, his best known composition, is more familiar today under its Irish title: Tabhair Dom do Lámh [Give me your hand]. This performance incorporates a variant, which appeared in the Collection of Ancient Scots Music published by Daniel Dow c.1776.

An excerpt from a love song in Irish by the harper-composer Thomas Connellan (c.1640 – c.1720) sung here by Róisín Elsafty, the young Irish sean nós ['old style'] singer from Connemara and accompanied by Siobhán Armstrong on early Irish harp.

These two pieces by the Elizabethan composers Orlando Gibbons (1583 – 1625) and Anthony Holborne (c. 1545 – 1602) present the Irish harp as it may have been played in English Renaissance consort music.

Carolan's Concerto

Turlough Carolan (1670 – 1738) is the best known of the 18th century Irish harper composers. His grandiosely titled Concerto attempted to imitate the new Baroque music style which was fashionable in Ireland at the period. This performance closely follows Edward Bunting's published version in his General Collection of the Ancient Irish Music 1796.
